Wall preparation and skim coating for wallpaper
Most wallpaper failures start under the paper. We repair, skim coat, sand and prime walls so the paper lies flat, the seams stay closed and the wall is easy to change later.

In short
- Textured or patched walls need a skim coat before most wallpapers.
- We fix cracks, holes, nail pops and torn drywall paper first.
- A wallcovering primer improves adhesion and makes future removal easier.
- Fresh drywall in new builds also needs priming before paper.
What is included
- Inspection under raking light
- Crack, hole and nail-pop repair
- Sealing torn drywall paper
- Skim coat with joint compound where needed
- Sanding to a smooth, even plane
- Dust removal
- Wallcovering primer
Why skim coat before wallpaper
Many homes in Gwinnett County have orange-peel or knockdown texture on the walls. Texture, patches and joint lines show through most wallpapers, especially papers with a sheen or a light background. A skim coat fills the texture so the wall becomes one smooth plane.
Why primer matters
Bare drywall and fresh joint compound absorb paste unevenly. A primer made for wallcovering seals the surface, gives the paste something to grip and lets you remove the paper later without pulling off the drywall face. We choose the primer based on the paper and the wall.
What affects the price
Every quote is written after we see the walls or photos of them. These are the things that move the number:
- Type and depth of texture
- Amount of repair needed
- Drywall or plaster
- Room size and ceiling height
- Whether old wallpaper must be removed first

FAQ
Common questions
Is skim coating always necessary?
No. Smooth, sound walls only need repairs and primer. We recommend skim coating when texture or patches would show through the paper.
How long does a skim coat need to dry?
Drying time depends on thickness, humidity and temperature. In humid Georgia summers it can take longer, so we plan the schedule around it.
Can you prep walls for painting too?
Yes. The same prep gives a much better paint finish.
