Can You Wallpaper Over Painted Walls? Flat, Satin and Gloss Paint

Yes, you can wallpaper over painted walls, but not straight onto any paint. Glossy paint is too slick for paste to grip, and chalky builder-grade flat paint can let go under the weight of wet paper. The fix is to clean the wall, test the paint's adhesion, dull glossy surfaces and apply a wallcovering primer before hanging.

In short

  • Painted walls are the most common base for wallpaper.
  • Gloss and semi-gloss: sand or use a bonding primer first.
  • Chalky flat paint: test adhesion; prime to bind the surface.
  • Fresh paint must cure fully before paper goes on.

How different paints behave

Paint finishIssueWhat we do
Flat builder paintCan be chalky; paper may pull the paint offAdhesion test, then wallcovering primer
Eggshell and satinUsually a good baseClean, light scuff where needed, prime
Semi-gloss and glossToo slick for pasteSand to dull or use a bonding primer
Fresh paintNot fully curedWait for full cure per the paint maker

The simple adhesion test

Press a strip of masking tape firmly on the wall and pull it off fast. If paint comes off on the tape, the paint is not bonded well enough to hold wallpaper and needs to be addressed first.

Why primer is the key step

A wallcovering primer gives paste an even, consistent surface, helps the paper slide into position, and, importantly, makes the paper strippable later without pulling up the paint or the drywall face.

Common in Gwinnett homes

Many newer homes in Grayson, Loganville and across Gwinnett County have flat builder paint over light texture. That combination usually means a skim coat and primer. See wallpaper in a new-construction home.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to sand painted walls before wallpaper?

Only glossy or semi-gloss finishes, or areas with drips and bumps.

How long should paint cure before wallpapering?

Follow the paint manufacturer's cure time; fresh paint that feels dry may not be fully cured.

Can I paint over wallpaper later?

It is possible but not recommended. Removing the paper gives a better result.
