How Many Rolls of Wallpaper Do I Need? (Free Calculator)
To find how many rolls you need, work in strips, not square feet: divide the total wall width by the roll width to get the number of strips, then see how many full-height strips one roll gives after allowing for the pattern repeat. Use the calculator below, then add one roll as a spare from the same batch.
In short
- Measure each wall's width and the ceiling height in feet.
- Check the roll width, roll length and pattern repeat on the product page.
- Large repeats waste more paper, so you need more rolls.
- Order one extra roll from the same batch for repairs.
You need
— rolls
This estimate assumes full-height strips. Doors and windows are only partly deducted in practice, because strips above and below them still use paper. Send us your measurements and the product link, and we will double-check before you order.
How installers calculate rolls
- Strips needed = total wall width ÷ roll width, rounded up.
- Strip length = wall height + one pattern repeat + a few inches for trimming.
- Strips per roll = roll length ÷ strip length, rounded down.
- Rolls = strips needed ÷ strips per roll, rounded up, plus a spare.
Where people go wrong
- Square-foot shortcuts. Dividing wall area by roll area ignores the waste at the top of every roll.
- Single vs double rolls. In the US, wallpaper is often priced per single roll but sold in double rolls. Check what one "roll" means on the listing.
- Mixed batches. Rolls from different print runs can differ in shade. Buy everything at once and check that batch numbers match.

FAQ
Common questions
What is a standard wallpaper roll size?
Many US double rolls are about 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long, and wider 27-inch rolls are also common. Always check the product listing.
What does pattern repeat mean?
The vertical distance before the pattern repeats. Each strip has to start at the same point in the pattern, so a bigger repeat means more waste.
Should I buy an extra roll?
Yes. One spare from the same batch covers mistakes and future repairs.
