Which Wall Should Be the Accent Wall? A Wallpaper Guide

The best accent wall is the one your eye lands on first when you enter the room, or the wall behind the room's main piece: the bed, the sofa, the dining table or the desk. Avoid walls broken up by several doors and windows, and avoid the wall you walk in through, because it is the one you see least.

In short

  • Bedroom: behind the headboard.
  • Living room: behind the sofa or around the fireplace.
  • Dining room: the wall facing the entrance or behind the sideboard.
  • Skip walls with many openings; the pattern gets chopped up.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A wall full of openings. Doors and windows chop the pattern into pieces.
  • A random wall. If nothing sits against it, the accent looks accidental.
  • Ignoring the corners. The pattern should end cleanly at inside corners, so layout matters.
  • Forgetting the light. Raking window light shows every bump on the wall under thin papers.

Cost

An accent wall is the most affordable way to use premium paper. National data puts a 30 to 60 square foot accent wall at about $120 to $500 installed. See wallpaper installation cost.

FAQ

Common questions

Should the accent wall be the darkest wall?

Not necessarily. It should be the wall with the strongest pattern or color relative to the others.

Can the accent wall have a window?

One centered window can work well; several openings usually do not.

Do accent walls still look current?

Yes. A single papered wall remains one of the most popular ways to use wallpaper.
