Straight, Half-Drop and Random Match: Wallpaper Pattern Types Explained

Every wallpaper label lists a pattern repeat (how far down the design repeats) and a match type. In a straight match, neighboring strips line up at the same height; in a half-drop, every other strip shifts down by half the repeat; in a random (free) match, strips do not need to line up at all. Half-drop and large repeats usually need more rolls.

In short

  • Pattern repeat: the vertical distance before the design repeats.
  • Straight match: easiest to plan; common for stripes and geometrics.
  • Half-drop: more natural, diagonal flow; more waste.
  • Random match: textures and plains; least waste. Reverse hanging means every other strip is flipped.

Reverse hanging

Some plain and textured papers say "reverse hang": every second strip is turned upside down. This evens out slight color differences from edge to edge. It is an installation instruction, not a pattern type, and skipping it can make seams obvious.

How the match affects your order

Each strip has to start at the right point in the pattern, so part of every roll is cut off as waste. Bigger repeats and half-drop matches waste more. Enter your repeat into our roll calculator and add a spare roll from the same batch.

Reading the label

  • Repeat: often shown in inches and centimeters.
  • Match: straight, half-drop (sometimes shown with two numbers) or random.
  • Batch/lot: must match on every roll.

FAQ

Common questions

Which match type is easiest to install?

Random match, followed by straight match. Half-drop takes the most planning.

Does a half-drop pattern need more rolls?

Usually yes, because of the extra offset cut on alternate strips.

What does a repeat of 0 mean?

No pattern repeat: typically a random-match texture or plain paper.
