Mural guide
How to Measure a Wall for a Wallpaper Mural Before You Order
Measure the wall's width at the top, middle and bottom, and its height at both corners, then use the largest numbers, because walls are never perfectly square. Most mural makers then add bleed: Murals Your Way, for example, adds about an inch to the height and width of multi-panel murals. Do not trim anything before installation.
In short
- Measure width in three places and height at each corner.
- Use the largest measurement, not the average.
- Check how much bleed the maker adds, and whether you should add it yourself.
- Note windows, doors and outlets so the focal point lands in a clear area.
Step by step
- Width: measure corner to corner at the top, middle and bottom of the wall.
- Height: measure floor (or top of baseboard) to ceiling at each corner.
- Use the largest width and the largest height.
- Check the maker's bleed rule. Some add bleed automatically; others ask you to include it.
- Sketch the wall with windows, doors, outlets and switches marked.
- Decide the focal point: where the main subject of the image should sit.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only once in the middle.
- Forgetting baseboards and crown molding.
- Placing the main subject behind a sofa, TV or door swing.
- Trimming panels before hanging; extra material is trimmed on the wall.

FAQ
Common questions
How much extra should I add to my mural size?
Follow the manufacturer: some add bleed automatically. Murals Your Way adds about one inch to the height and width of multi-panel murals.
What if my walls are uneven?
Use the largest measurement. The extra is trimmed during installation.
Can a mural go around a corner?
Yes, but it needs careful planning so the image does not distort at the corner. Ask your installer before ordering.
