Grasscloth Installation in Atlanta: Cost, Seams and Why It Needs a Specialist
Grasscloth typically costs $5 to $12 per square foot for the material alone, according to Angi, and takes longer to install than printed wallpaper. It is woven from natural fibers, so the seams always show and the shade varies between strips. A skilled installer controls where those seams fall and keeps paste off the face, which stains.
In short
- Material: about $5 to $12 per sq ft nationally, before labor.
- Visible seams and shade variation are normal, not defects.
- Many manufacturers ask for a liner paper and paste applied to the wall.
- Best in dry rooms: dining, living, bedrooms, offices and powder rooms without a shower.
Why grasscloth costs more to install
- Prep. Many grasscloth manufacturers recommend lining the wall with liner paper first. Madeaux, for example, instructs installers to cross-line the wall before hanging.
- Clean paste work. Paste on the face leaves permanent marks. Manufacturer instructions say plainly: do not let paste reach the surface.
- Shade planning. Strips are laid out and ordered before hanging so the color shifts gradually instead of jumping at a seam.
- Slower hanging. Natural fibers cannot be smoothed as hard as vinyl without damage.
What to expect from the finished wall
Manufacturers say it directly: variation between strips will always occur and the seams will be visible. That texture is the reason people choose grasscloth. What you should not see are gaps, overlaps, paste stains or crooked seams.
Where grasscloth works in a Georgia home
| Room | Good fit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dining room, living room, bedroom, office | Yes | Dry, low-contact walls |
| Powder room (no shower) | Yes, with care | Keep it away from the sink splash zone |
| Full bathroom | No | Steam and water stain natural fibers |
| Kitchen behind sink or stove | No | Splashes and grease |
| Kids' rooms and mudrooms | Usually no | Hard to clean; dust only |
For a grasscloth look in a bathroom, choose a vinyl grasscloth, which is washable.
Caring for grasscloth
Dust it with a dry brush or the brush attachment of a vacuum. Do not scrub or wet it.

FAQ
Common questions
Why are the seams visible in my grasscloth?
Because it is woven from natural fibers and cannot be pattern-matched. Visible seams are expected; gaps, overlaps and stains are not.
Can grasscloth go in a bathroom?
Only in a powder room without a shower. In full bathrooms, use a vinyl grasscloth look-alike.
Do I need a liner under grasscloth?
Many manufacturers recommend one. Your installer should follow the instructions that come with your rolls.
